About PSA screening
Screening is a way to find signs of the disease in men, even if they don't have symptoms.Why get screened
The earlier it is detected
the more options a man has.
Currently
the main screening tools tools are a blood test for PSA and DRE exam.
The PSA test measures the amount of a substance (PSA) in the blood stream,
only is only produced in the prostate. The DRE is quick 6 second painless
feeling of part of the prostate to determine if its size and texture are
normal.
These
tools cannot tell you if you have a cancer; they suggest the need for
further evaluation.
We
strongly urge African American men and men who have a father, brother,
or son with prostate cancer to begin annual screening at age 35-40, and
all other men at begin at age 50.
Typically
your primary doctor does this screening. If you don't have a doctor you
can get screened at special events. Some of those events are listed below.
