Our Coalition

In the Spring of 2003 a pilot group of prostate cancer survivors met with the ambition of forming a non-profit organization to help the men of Michigan in the battle against prostate cancer.

Since then the organizarion has been launched. On the first Wednesday of each month a Board of Directors meeting is held in Lansing, MI to review and develop actions to benefit the men of Michigan.

Success will only come if we are able to activate the participation and communication of the 2 million or more men in Michigan at risk for prostate cancer and many more people that care about them.

We need to create links and a dialog between patients, clinicians, local support groups, state and national agencies.

Below are some of our driving principles.

Timely, informed choices regarding diligent detection and treatment is the key to prostate cancer survivorship quality.

Participation

We are a member of this organization. We have been active providing survivor advocate input to the refinement of their Prostate Cancer Control Plan for Michigan. We provided this input by our participation in the Prostate Cancer Advisory Committee's workgroups to propose goals and objectives for implementation by 2010 in three areas: primary and secondary prevention, treatment, and survivorship/quality of life. A decision was made to proceed with forming an Action Committee to refine and implement the goals and objective for survivorship/quality of life.

Currently we are actively providing inputs to this Action Committee's workgroups charged with Prostate Cancer Priority: "By 2010, practice guidelines and educational materials will be available for professionals and survivors/families that address prostate cancer symptom management across the survivor continuum."
